Really Deep personal essay
I believe in living life to its fullest. Until the start of my freshman year I didn’t really do that. But as my freshman year drove on I found something to do that was fun and exhilarating…Ultimate Frisbee. With all of the running back and forth and absolutely no contact whatsoever it was definitely a change from sports I had played in the past. With nothing but band left I didn’t have much of a choice of something to do during my tutorial time. It was either Rugby or Ultimate Frisbee, and I had had some not so great experiences playing rugby, so ultimate Frisbee was really starting to look good. Another reason I chose Ultimate Frisbee is that My band Squad leader Josh had started it, and before him was my other Squad leader Jeff, everyone minus about two people in my section had played providing more incentive for me to play.
Right…on to why it changed my life and why it’s so important to me. To anyone who thinks that it is just throwing a Frisbee back and forth is crazy. It’s running, and a lot of it, and catching left and right, when I played on the field last year my longest dive was about three feet, and it was worthy it because I made the catch. And for a no contact sport you really feel the pain. Picture this, five people all with their heads up chasing on single flying object, as it slowly descends the people get closer together and all with one single goal to catch that one object. Of course tons of havoc and disarray is all that would come of this, people fall over each other, and land five feet away from where they started, I even crashed into the goal post on the freshman field once, and sprained my ankle. But it really is all worth it, because when you put this together with all of those other things I’ve said and it makes one of the most invigorating thrills in life.
Lately on Tuesday and Thursday we have been playing in the parking lot outside of the Band Hall. It just isn’t the same as on grass because you can’t jump and you can’t dive without the fear of getting eaten alive by gravel. We can’t play on the field anymore because the Sheriff said we weren’t allowed to. One good thing that comes from playing in the parking lot though has definitely got to be crashing into cars. I know it sounds stupid and it IS stupid, but it’s just part of playing ultimate Frisbee.
Life changes after marching band is over. With no incentive to stay after school nobody plays Ultimate Frisbee during the spring, or for that matter after November so I turn to baseball. I’m too lazy to go to practices so I never bothered to join a team, but I always have enjoyed playing. During the spring when marching band is over there really isn’t much to do. I decided to start playing baseball with the kids that go to my church’s school. It was great because I could pop in whenever I wanted pick up a glove and start playing. Baseball is to the spring to me what Ultimate Frisbee was in the fall. In baseball I got the same feel I did in playing Ultimate Frisbee. Playing in the outfield, and focusing on catching one little object, and diving so far only to catch the object, whether it was a frisbee or a baseball. And the running too, so much running. I always enjoyed running. In the fall it was running back and forth on a gravel parking lot, and in the spring it was running the bases or running to field the ball. Baseball and Ultimate Frisbee have really let me enjoy living life to its fullest.
Throughout life sports have defined who I am. I have been on so many teams with so many people, both in and out of school, but it was all to structured, and I decided by my freshman year that structure was just stupid, and I quit worrying about sports and having obligations to a team, so I could focus on just having fun. Since then, with so much less to focus on, I have just been able to live life to the fullest.
